Harischandra – the legendary household brand
The business began with a sense of purpose. Despite the bleak backdrop of the Second World War and the country, Ceylon, continuing to be administered under British rule, for C. A. Harischandra, a visionary local entrepreneur and philanthropist, 1943 served as a catalyst.
His entrepreneurial journey began with a dream to provide quality food products to Sri Lankans and on an unassuming plot of 20 perches in Matara thus began the milling of rice, kurakkan and chillies.
The business evolved to the milling of coconut oil and other lucrative ventures such as the setting up of rubber, paddy and timber mills.
Over the next decades, the business achieved exponential growth unveiling a broader range of food products and non-food categories such as kurakkan flour (1953) coffee and spices (1958), soap (1962) noodles (1966) and papadams(1978) hopper mixture, string hopper flour and thosai mixture(1990s). The company was incorporated under the Companies Ordinance Act in 1953 and debuted on the Colombo Stock Exchange in 1983.
As a philanthropic leader who considered employees as the most valuable asset, in an unprecedented move reflecting its community and social enterprise spirit, 40% of shares were transferred among employees. He also established the Harischandra Mills Provident Fund Association for employees,introducing the concept of Provident Fund to Sri Lanka.
The company's pioneering instinct was not limited to product innovation alone, the Harischandra identity evolved and has today become a much-loved household brand name.
Driving the brand towards an important growth phase was the expansion of its product line. Today, the Harischandra brand proudly boasts an unmatched selection of products that provides for the needs of all Sri Lankans.

හරිස්චන්ද්‍ර ව්‍යාපාරය ඇරඹෙනුයේ පුළුල් අරමුණක් පෙරදැරිවය. එහි ඉතිහාසය දෙවන ලෝක යුද සමය මෙන්ම බ්‍රිතාන්‍ය පාලනය මෙරට නතුව තිබු යුගය දක්වා ද දිවයයි.
මෙම සියලු අභියෝග මධ්‍යයේ ශ්‍රී ලාංකිකයන් හට ප්‍රමිතියෙන් උසස් ආහාර නිෂ්පාදන පිරිනැමීමේ දූරදර්ශි දැක්මෙන් යුතුව සී.ඒ.හරිස්චන්ද්‍ර නැමැති එම ධෛර්යවන්ත ශ්‍රී ලංකික ව්‍යවසායකයා මාතර ප්‍රදේශයේ පර්චස් 20ක පමණ බිම්කඩක සහල් , කුරක්කන් සහ මිරිස් ඇඹරුම්හලක් ආරම්භ කළේය.
ක්‍රමයෙන් අතුපතර විහිදා වර්ධනය වූ ව්‍යාපාරය පොල් තෙල්, රබර් අස්වනු සහ දැව සැකසුම් දක්වා ව්‍යාප්ත විය.
මීළඟ දශකය තුළ ව්‍යාපාරික ගමන්මගේ හැරවුම් ලක්ෂ්‍යයක් සනිටුහන් කරමින් හරිස්චන්ද්‍ර නිෂ්පාදන කුරක්කන් පිටි (1953), කෝපි සහ කුළුබඩු (1958), සබන් (1962), නූඩ්ල්ස් (1966), පපඩම් (1978), ඉඳිආප්ප පිටි සහ තෝසේ මිශ්‍රණය (1990) ආදී ආහාරමය සහ ආහාරමය නොවන නිෂ්පාදන රැසක් මෙරට පාරිභෝගික ජනතාව වෙනුවෙන් හඳුන්වා දුන්නේය. 1953දී ව්‍යාපාර ආඥාපනත යටතේ ලියාපදිංචි කෙරුණු අප සමාගම 1983 වසරේදී කොළඹ ව්‍යාපාර වස්තු හුවමාරුවේ ද ලියාපදිංචි සමාගමක් බවට පත්වූයේ දකුණුලක ප්‍රථම කොටස් වෙළඳපොළ ලැයිස්තුගත සමාගම වෙමිනි. සේවක සුබසාධනයේ දැවැන්ත පිම්මක් පනිමින් 1951දී අර්ථසාධක අරමුදල් ක්‍රමය ශ්‍රී ලංකාවට මුලින් ම හඳුන්වාදීමට සී.ඒ.හරිස්චන්ද්‍ර මහතා කටයුතු කළේය. ඒ, හරිස්චන්ද්‍ර ආයතනය තුළ සේවක අර්ථසාධක අරමුදල් සංගමය ස්ථාපිත කරමිනි.
පරාර්ථකාමී නියමුවෙකු ලෙස සිය කාර්යමණ්ඩල සමාජිකයන් සිය වටිනාම වත්කම ලෙස නිබඳ සැලකු හරිස්චන්ද්‍ර මහතා සමාගමේ කොටස් වලින් 40%ක් කාර්යමණ්ඩල සාමාජිකයන් වෙත ලබාදීමට කටයුතු කළේය.
2000 වසරේදී, හරිස්චන්ද්‍ර මහතාගේ වැඩිමල් මුණුපුරු එස්.එන්.සමරසිංහ මහතා හරිස්චන්ද්‍ර සමාගමේ කළමණාකාර අධ්‍යක්ෂවරයා වශයෙන් පත්විය. අදවන විට හරිස්චන්ද්‍ර පවුලේ තවත් සාමාජිකයෝ සිවුදෙනෙක් ව්‍යාපාරය සඳහා සෘජුව සම්බන්ධව සිටිති. හරිස්චන්ද්‍ර සමාගමේ නිර්මාතෘවරයාගේ බැණනුවන්වන ජි.එස්.වි.ද. සිල්වා මහතා 1978 වසරේදී එහි අධ්‍යෂවරයා ලෙස පත්වූ අතර, නිර්මාතෘවරයාගේ බාලම දියණියවන එම්. පී. ද සිල්වා මහත්මිය, එතුමන්ගේ වැඩිමහල් දියණිය කේ.ආර්. සමරසිංහ මහත්මිය සහ එතුමන්ගේ මුණුපුරු එච්.එන්.සමරසිංහ මහතා ද ව්‍යාපාරික මෙහෙයුම් කටයුතු සඳහා සෘජුව සම්බන්ධව සිටිති.
නිෂ්පාදන නවෝත්පාදනයට පමණක් සීමා නොවන හරිස්චන්ද්‍ර සමාගමේ දැක්මට අනුව යමින් එම සමාගම වර්තමානයේ පාරිභෝගික ජනතාවගේ හදවත දිනූ සන්නාමයක් බවට සිය නාමය තහවුරුකර ඇත.
හරිස්චන්ද්‍ර නාමය මෙරට ජනතාව අතරට ගෙනයාමේ ගමනේදී, පුළුල් නිෂ්පාදන පෙළ ඊට මනා දායකත්වයක් ලබා දී ඇත. අදවන විට හරිස්චන්ද්‍ර යනු ශ්‍රී ලාංකේය ජනතාවගේ අවශ්‍යතාවන් මැනවින් සපුරාලන අසමසම නිෂ්පාදන රැසකට හිමිකම් කියන සමාගමකි.

සෑම ශ්‍රී ලාංකේය නිවසකට ම ප්‍රමිතියෙන් උසස් ආහාර නිෂ්පාදන ලබාදීම සඳහා එම සමාගමේ නිර්මාතෘවරයා සතුව තිබූ දැක්ම හරිස්චන්ද්‍ර නාමය මෙතෙක් ආ ගමන තුළ නොවෙනස්ව පවතී.
